It is deceivingly harmless and plain looking and, is similar in appearance to some edible species. Yet, this death cap mushroom is lethal.
This species of mushroom, also known as the ‘silent assassin’, is responsible for more than 90% of deaths from mushroom poisoning. And this deadly fungus is currently seen throughout Greater Victoria in Vancouver Island.
People who accidentally eat this mushroom usually experience an upset stomach within 6-12 hours after intake. Then the discomfort goes away for up to 3 days, but toxins from this fungus remain in the bloodstream and secretly attacks the liver and kidneys, ultimately causing organ failure and even death.
If you see these death caps in your garden, pick them with rubber gloves and dispose of them in the garbage bin.
